Trying To Decide On Software?
Dan Jungclas, The Ancestry Guy strongly suggests using standalone software on a PC or MAC…preferably a PC. PC’s seem to manage data much better and are not limited to the new trend of using “Apps”.
Data can often be shared between software and other genealogists/family historians using GEDCOM files. Please refer to the software (support) to determine if GEDCOM is supported by that respective software.
Presently, I use the software listed beow and have been happy with them for years!
So, Try These Resources… They Are Invaluable!
(*When purchasing any software especially older versions, make sure that the software you are purchasing has never been registered!)
Roots Magic*: Is another excellent choice! Can be used with a PC & Windows or Mac. RootsMagic Essentials* is a free genealogy program that contains many core features from the award-winning Roots Magic family tree software. Downloading RootsMagic Essentials is absolutely free. Supports GEDCOM
Legacy Family Tree: Is another excellent choice! Can be used only with a PC & Windows. They offer a series of online videos for research for an additional cost. Supports GEDCOM
The Next Generation of Genealogy Is an excellent choice & is...
THE CHOICE OF DAN JUNGCLAS, THE ANCESTRY GUY!
Can be used with Windows or a Mac. This requires some basic computer knowledge and requires additional online services. This software will not disappoint and is well worth the additional security it offers! Supports GEDCOM
Family Tree Maker has become very unreliable due to its lack of security. I have been using FTM since it's first introduction in 1989. I no longer endorse it for this reason. Since it was sold to Mackiev the security of my personal databse was compromised several times. I believe the software is responsible. If you are interested in it do a Google search on in and include the BBB (Better Business Bureau)
Adobe's Acrobat Full Version or Equivalent*: Is an excellent choice for preserving records, documents, photos & scans especially when making notations. Can be used with a PC & Windows or Mac. Most computers come with Adobe Acrobat Reader but using the FULL VERSION or EQUIVALENT is highly recommended. There are more current versions but using the older version of Acrobat X (10)* is stronlgy suggested. It can usually be found online via Google, eBay or Amazon. Because this is an old version the manufacturer no longer offers support.
MS Excel or Equivalent is an excellent hoice for tracking your research and creating logs and so on!
